Many operatic and dramatic societies are affiliated to NODA (National Operatic and Dramatic Association).
They produce about six magazines a year (which are available from Angie Harris). Four are national and give details of events, productions, books on theatre, information on scenery, props, costumes etc through adverts, general amateur gossip and a comprehensive ‘what’s on’ around the country. Two magazines are based on the Midlands and mainly publish reviews of productions and local information.
We also use their insurance, which covers both the production and the cast and also guidance on areas such as Health and Safety, Child Protection and other legalities.
HIGHLIGHTS AND INFORMTION FROM NODA MAGAZINE SUMMER 2008
MEDALS AND BADGES
Societies can award NODA medals to long service members, starting at the completion of 10 years service right up to 70 years plus. Service within any society counts and all the years can be added together. As the price of gold and silver has increased recently – the price of the medals is being increased too.
If you would like to apply speak to Angie Harris.

DON’T BE OTHERWISE ENGAGED IN FOUR YEARS TIME!
Because… on October 3 1877 W.S.Gilberts stage farce ‘Engaged’ had it’s first performance. In 1961 Kenneth Mobbs and George Rowell set the play to music from lesser known works – and the first professional production was performed at The Theatre Royal, Windsor in November 1962. More in the magazine.
THE PIRATES IN PENZANCE
You may expect that the members of Penzance Operatic Society would know their namesake operetta. But much to the surprise of event organisers, they found this was not the case when they held a one day workshop. But the 64 society members who turned up for the event learned the whole show from scratch during the day. Next year they plan to learn the Mikado. Full story in magazine.
FINALE
If you want to read these and other stories about our Amateur friends, do borrow our copy of the NODA magazine. Perhaps we ought to do a piece next year about our tour to Kidderminster and Droitwich. There is so much talent in our society… any volunteers to do this?
IF YOU WANT TO SEE ANOTHER PRODUCTION OF HMS PINAFORE
It has been on stage recently at Burton on Trent, Tyne and Wear and Plymouth, in June but there were no later listings. These may come in the Autumn publication.
